Tips For Removing A Tree Without Harming Nearby Trees

by Bill Kuhn

A dead, diseased, or damaged tree is a hazard in your yard that necessitates removal. It can be challenging, though, when there are other healthy trees growing nearby that you don't want removed. Taking down the problem tree without damaging the others requires some finesse. The following tips can help.

Tip #1: Plan to limb the tree

One of the biggest dangers to other trees is that they may become entangled in the branches of the tree that is coming down, which may lead to major damage to their healthy branches. The simplest way to prevent this is to first limb the tree. Remove each limb from the tree individually. A tree service will use ropes to secure the branches so they don't drop but are instead gently lowered to the ground without crashing into a neighboring tree.

Tip #2: Consider sectional removal

For a tall tree or one with a wide trunk, even bringing down the tree once limbed can cause irreparable damage to neighboring trees. In this case, have the trunk removed in sections. The removal company, starting at the top, will remove sections of trunk. Once again, these will be roped to a system that allows the sections to be lowered to the ground so they don't cause any damage to your neighboring trees.

Tip #3: Protect the trunks

Another danger to neighboring trees is mechanical damage caused by trying to maneuver removal equipment between the tree trunks. Wrap each trunk of the trees you are keeping with a barrier made from wire mesh fencing. This prevents equipment like lifts and stump grinders from bumping into the trunks and damaging the bark. You can remove the cages once the dead tree is removed.

Tip #4: Remove stumps carefully

Tree roots systems often become intertwined, which means there may be symbiotic nutrient sharing roots connecting the healthy trees with the tree you removed. This is especially common if the trees are the same species. Using a chemical stump killer can also damage the nearby healthy trees because of this intertwining of roots. You can avoid this problem by opting to have the stump ground down instead of using chemical means to remove it. Another option is to simply dig out the stump if the tree was young or relatively small. This may not be viable for larger trees with deep or extensive root systems.
