Hate Mowing The Lawn? 5 Tricks To Save Money And Time Cutting Your Grass

by Bill Kuhn

Do you love a nice, green lawn but hate the work it takes to keep it that way? The good news is that there are several ways to make it easier to keep your lawn trimmed and beautiful. Here are 5 tips anyone can use.

Keep it Curvy. The more times that you (or someone you pay) has to stop the mower to re-position it, the longer it will take to finish. You can help avoid unnecessary re-positioning by planting a wide lawn with gentle curves rather than stark and straight lines. Walk the lawn's edges with a wide broom to simulate a mower so that you can plan out a design that allows easy and flowing coverage.

Add Moving Strips. Mowing strips are areas along the sides of the lawn that transition from the low grass to the next landscape feature, such as bushes or trees. This transition area should be level with the ground and obstacle-free so that the mower can run over it as it mows the nearby grass. You can use various methods to create a transitional strip, including flat stones, bricks, or mulch.

Remove Obstacles. Working around obstacles within the grass is another time waster, so keep things as clean and clear as possible within the grassy area. This may mean relocating lawn features like trees or shrubs, garden beds, play sets, and lawn sculptures. If you really want to keep a focal point in the lawn, line it with a flat border (like pavers) that will facilitate getting close to the obstacle. This way, you won't have to go back to trim it manually.

Don't Over-water. Over-watering the lawn not only wastes your money, but it also may make the grass harder to mow properly. Soft, squishy soil can create hazards for mowers and result in uneven terrain that looks less-than-stellar in your yard. It could also result in mildew and additional weeds. Be sure to assess your sprinkler schedules to determine if the dirt in any areas -- particularly shaded spots -- is getting too wet, and adjust sprinklers accordingly.

Hire Help. Of course, the best way to avoid spending unnecessary time caring for your lawn is to hire a mowing service, like The Cutting Edge Lawn and Landscaping LLC. If the idea of enjoying an iced tea on the patio while others mow your lawn appeals to you, you can still save money by employing the above ideas when designing the lawn to take as little time as possible.

Whether you mow your yard yourself or you pay others to do it instead, your lawn -- and your wallet -- can only benefit from applying any of these simple mowing solutions.
