Tips To Assist With Cleaning Your Brick Home's Exterior

by Bill Kuhn

If you live in a brick home and grass clippings, mud, and other materials have stained portions of your home's exterior, improve the appearance of your residence by completing the steps below. Afterward, maintain the cleanliness of the bricks by occasionally removing dirty substance from each one's exterior.

Supplies

  • ladder
  • safety harness
  • broom
  • long-handled scrub brush (stiff bristles)
  • plastic sheeting
  • gas or electric-powered pressure washer
  • detergent
  • water hose
  • oxygenated bleach

Eliminate Loose Debris And Prepare A Cleaning Solution

Wear a safety harness that is secured to a permanent fixture on your property while climbing a ladder that is leaning against your home. Use a broom or long-handled scrub brush to loosen clumps of dirt or other substances that are stuck in crevices between bricks.

Fill a gas or electric-powered pressure washer's reservoir with water that is mixed with detergent. Use detergent that is designed to be used in a pressure washer to achieve the best results. Agitate the components in the reservoir until they have a sudsy appearance. Use large pieces of plastic sheeting to cover the property that surrounds your home so that the soapy water does not come into contact with grass or plants.

Use A Pressure Washer To Clean Each Brick's Surface

Turn on the pressure washer and aim the nozzle towards one of the top corner's on one side of your home. As the cleaning solution is applied to the brick surface, dirty substances will run down the side of your home. Move the pressure washer's nozzle across the side of the home, beginning at the top of the side and working your way down.

After cleaning one side of your home, move the ladder to another side of your home and complete the same process, cleaning the side of the home from the top to the bottom. If you run out of the cleaning mixture before you are done cleaning your home's exterior, turn off the machine and add more detergent and water to the pressure washer's tank.

If any of the stains on the brick surface do not respond solely to the soapy water, move a scrub brush back and forth over the stained surfaces to loosen them. You can also add a small amount of oxygenated bleach to the pressure washer's tank to strengthen the cleaning solution. Once stains have been eliminated, attach an adjustable nozzle to a water hose. Adjust the nozzle to a setting that provides strong water pressure when the hose is turned on. Rinse each side of your home with water.
