Four Exciting Ways To Add More Non-Greenery To Your Landscape

by Bill Kuhn

When you think of landscaping, the first thing that comes to mind is probably lots of green bushes, flowers, and trees. But landscaping is not just about the greenery. You need some non-greenery to balance it all out! If your landscape is looking a bit heavy on the greenery, here are some exciting ways to add more non-greenery to the space.

Build a Boulder Wall

Consider building a wall with a few large boulders down on side of your property or even to one side of your grilling space. All you really need is four or five big boulders, which you can have delivered and put into place by a quarry service or rock delivery company. You can have guests sit on the boulders as you grill dinner in front of them, or you can decorate the boulders with some potted plants. Choose boulders in an array of colors so you can clearly see the difference between them. They give your yard a nice, natural look while also breaking up the greenery.

Install a Fountain

Some water is another nice, natural addition to your landscape. Consider having a fountain installed in the middle of your yard. Choose one made from gray or brown concrete so it stands out against the lawn. A fountain with a statue in the center will add interest thanks to the way it towers over the surrounding area. You can even plant some bright flowers, like snap dragons or lilies, around the fountain to create more separation between the grass and the fountain.

Add Some Rock Mulch

All you might need to do is mulch over one or two of your garden beds with some pea gravel. The gravel is typically gray in color, so it adds some natural color variation to the space. Plus, the gravel is great at preventing weeds from growing in the garden beds. You can purchase pea gravel in bags at the home improvement store if you're only doing a small bed, though it's worth having it delivered for a larger garden bed because it can get pretty heavy.

Put up a white picket fence.

A fence is another way to add a little non-greenery to your landscape. Surround your yard in a low, white picket fence, or run the fence along the edge of a garden bed to create some separation. If you do not like the look of a white fence, a gray or black fence will also look nice.
