3 Mowing Tips For Keeping Your Lawn Healthy And Green During Hot Weather

by Bill Kuhn

As the lawn mowing season start to get hotter, you may worry that your grass could turn brown and wither in the excessive heat. If so, use the following tips while mowing your lawn to help keep your grass healthy and green during the hot summer months.

Keep a Sharp Blade

Before you start mowing your grass, make sure your blade is as sharp as possible. If you mow your grass with a dull blade, the mower will not create an even cut on the blades of grass. Instead, it will tear the blades, leaving jagged, frayed edges.

If your grass has frayed edges, these areas will brown before the rest of the grass. The fraying will also allow moisture to evaporate more quickly out of your grass, turning the rest of it brown.

However, if you have a sharp blade, the cuts made will be even. These even cuts will allow the grass to heal itself faster, sealing in the water and keeping your lawn green.

Raise Your Mower's Cutting Deck

When the weather is temperate, you can get away with cutting your lawn at a shorter height to keep from having to mow it very often. However, cutting your grass too short in hot weather could make it turn brown or even kill it.

If you cut your grass too short in the hot summer months, doing so exposes more of the soil to air. When the soil is exposed to too much air, it dries out faster, so not enough moisture is not able to reach the roots.

Instead of cutting your grass short, raise the deck of your mower's cutting deck about quarter to a half an inch. Giving the blades of grass extra height can help shield them from drying out too quickly.

Mow Early in the Day

Another way you can protect your grass from the excessive heat is to time your mowing chore for early in the day. If you try to mow your grass when the sun it at its peak, the trauma from the cutting and stress from the heat could kill your grass.

However, if you mow in the morning, the temperatures are relatively cooler. Also, you can water your lawn afterward and before the hottest part of the day to give it extra moisture to protect it, since the water will evaporate more slowly in the morning as compared to the afternoon.

Using the above tips when the weather becomes hot can help you keep your lawn lush and healthy. If you need more information or help with maintaining your yard, contact a lawn care service, such as Heritage Lawn & Landscape LLC, to discuss the possibility of having them mow your lawn for you.
