Weed Control Tips For Spring

by Bill Kuhn

Having a lush, green lawn can make your spring and summer activities more pleasant. Weeds that are left unchecked have the potential to rob your lawn of precious resources, compromising the quality of your outdoor living space. As spring approaches, you need to start thinking about taking action to control the growth of weeds in your yard.

Take immediate action to treat dandelions.

One of the most pesky weeds that homeowners deal with is the dandelion. These noxious plants can infiltrate your lawn and spread quickly if they are left to go to seed. The best way to get rid of dandelions is to watch for them to begin growing in the spring as your lawn emerges from its dormant winter state.

As soon as you see the tell-tale broad leaves of a dandelion within your lawn, use a specialized dandelion weed killer to spot treat each plant. This will minimize the amount of damage to your lawn as a whole and help you kill off dandelions before they shed their feathery seeds throughout your lawn.

Use caution when removing weeds in newly-planted areas.

If you see any sparse spots within your lawn that haven't weathered the winter well, you might apply some grass seed to help promote new growth. Tender young blades of grass are not capable of withstanding exposure to harsh weed killers, and seeds and chemical weed killers don't mix.

Rather than utilizing a weed killer in areas where new growth is occurring, try using a natural weed removal method instead. Pull weeds out by hand or pour boiling water on them to kill them off without compromising the health of your new grass.

Use a pre-emergence product on your lawn.

Many lawns are plagued by crabgrass. Catching this type of weed before it has a chance to germinate in the spring can be helpful in eliminating crabgrass from your yard. As soon as the snow melts and your lawn is exposed, apply a pre-emergence herbicide to your entire landscape.

These herbicides are designed to prevent crabgrass and other weed varieties from germinating, so they never sprout within your lawn.

Caring for your home's landscape means keeping your grass healthy and free from weeds. Spring is the perfect time to start thinking about weed control if you want your yard to be ready for outdoor living during the warmer months. Spot-treat dandelions, use natural methods on new growth, and apply a pre-emergence herbicide to manage weeds this spring.
