3 Common Sprinkler System Problems And Ways Homeowners Can Deal With Them

by Bill Kuhn

Sprinkler systems are amazing for homeowners looking to conveniently water their grass on a consistent schedule. Unfortunately, they can malfunction from time to time. Here are three common problems that can occur and ways to handle them.

Clogged Sprinkler Heads

Every now and then, your sprinkler heads can clog. This is will be extremely apparent when water doesn't come out of the heads at a consistent rate. The culprit is usually dirt, which isn't that difficult of a problem to troubleshoot on your own.

What you'll need to do is pull the sprinkler head out of the ground and then clip it so it remains up. Then, unscrew the top and take the filter out. Wash this filter under a faucet until you visibly see dirt and other debris wash away. Once you're done washing the filter, insert it back in the head and turn the water back on.

Leaking

Leaking is another problem that can happen to the sprinkler heads. It's important to handle this issue immediately before you use more water than what's necessary. Sprinkler heads can leak for many reasons, such as broken seals or just structural issues.

Before replacing the head, try to see if you can patch the leak up with a waterproof seal. There are plenty solvents and tape you can use to create this seal. If that doesn't do the trick, then you should consider replacing the heads entirely. Just make sure you select heads that correspond with your particular sprinkler system.

Main Line Damage

One of the worst things that can go wrong with your residential sprinkler system is for the main line to burst. When this happens, water can overflow on your lawn and cause severe damage. Since this problem is quite extensive to fix, you should contact a professional repair company.

Someone who's competent and licensed will work to fix the main line before your entire lawn is flooded with water. Once the immediate water issues are taken care of, they'll dig up part of your lawn to assess problems with the main line. Certain sections may need to be patched up or replaced. Either way, you'll receive a full breakdown of the problem along with price estimates of the work that's required.

If there is a sprinkler system on your property, it may stop working out of nowhere. You don't have to worry, though, when you understand how to respond to certain problems before they spiral out of control and cost you a fortune. Contact a service, like Pacific  Sunscapes, for more help.
