Lawn Improvement Recommendations To Help Your Landscape Condition And Property Value

by Bill Kuhn

The appearance of your lawn takes some time and effort each week during the growing months, but it can boost the appearance and value of your property with the right types of improvements. Here are some recommendations to get your lawn to an improved appearance and a boost to its condition and health.

Apply Edging Maintenance

The edges of your lawn along areas of pavement and next to landscape bedding areas can provide a lot to the appearance of your lawn's condition. Straight edges to your lawn's surface will contribute to a more uniform and well-maintained look to your entire lawn and, as a result, your entire yard.

For example, some lawns can begin to grow in so thickly that the edges of the lawn will begin to grow up and over onto the pavement in mounds and patches, obscuring part of the pavement. However, with a lawn edging tool, you can trim back these overgrowths to keep your lawn controlled within its boundaries.

You can use a lawn edging tool, such as a gas- or electric-powered edger, but if you only have a weed eater, this can work just as well. If you use a weed eater, turn the tool on its side so the string cuts down into the edge of the grass instead of horizontally when you use it to cut weeds. This vertical trimming will cut off any errant lawn plants that are growing upon your pavement or into your landscape areas.

It can also be a good idea to install an effective landscape edging or curbing to control your lawn's growth. A curbing or edge material can be made of vinyl, metal, bricks, or concrete curbing that you pour into forms at the edges of your bedding areas. This keeps your lawn at an even edge and prevents the lawn from growing into your bedding areas and your bedding materials from creeping onto your lawn.

Handle Weeds Regularly

Weeds can grow within your lawn as soon as the soil warms up in spring and throughout the end of fall. It is better to get a handle on weeds each time you mow your lawn instead of waiting to treat them in the middle of summer when they are thick and abundant. As you mow your lawn, take a few minutes beforehand to pull any visible weeds from the soil. Try to pull the entire root from the soil so the weed will not grow back.

You can also spend a few minutes each evening pulling a few weeds when the soil is soft, such as the day after you have irrigated. This helps you to pull the weeds effectively and so you don't have to rely on herbicides.
