5 Reasons To Remove A Healthy Tree

by Bill Kuhn

A tree doesn't have to be dead or suffering from damage to qualify for removal. There are a few good reasons why you may need to consider removing a healthy tree from your property.

1. Structural Damage

One of the most common reasons for healthy tree removal is likely structural damage. Roots can push up paving and destroy sidewalks, or branches may be endangering the roof or tearing off siding when the wind blows. These problems occur when an overly large tree species is planted in the wrong location. Removing the tree may be the only way to stop major damage to your home.

2. Invasive Concerns

If you have a known invasive tree species in your yard, such as the tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), removing it may be the right thing to do to keep the plant from spreading and impacting the native flora and fauna. In some locations, homeowners may even be required to remove certain invasive species. A professional service will be able to remove the invasive tree in the prescribed manner to prevent it from spreading or growing back from the roots.

3. Climate Control

Trees are often prized for the shade they provide, but sometimes too much shade isn't a good thing. Trees that shade in the wrong season can prevent solar heat gain from helping offset winter heating energy needs, for example. Shade may also interfere with the climate in the yard, especially if you want a sunny and warm piece of land for a vegetable garden. Removal of the tree may be the only way to manage the climate in the way desired.

4. Maintenance Challenges

There are several ways that trees can impact lawn and yard maintenance. Trees with lots of surface roots that cause soil upheaval can make it difficult to mow and manage weeds in the lawn. Some trees may simply produce more litter than you can manage in the form of fallen leaves or messy fruits. Other trees may have ongoing pruning needs to maintain a healthy shape or to remove copious amounts of dead wood. If you can't keep up with needed maintenance, removal is usually the best option.

5. Over Crowding

Too many trees in a small yard will cause more harm than good. Not only do overcrowded trees endanger structures, but they also impact each other's health. Poor airflow in a crowded space increases the chances of disease and pest infestations. These dangers are worsened by the fact the trees may be over-competing for water and soil nutrients. Removing at least some of the trees will help.
