Pizza Ovens: Five Reasons to Choose Stainless Steel Over Wood

by Bill Kuhn

If you've always dreamed of making pizza in a more traditional way, in the comfort of your own backyard, then a pizza oven is a must-have purchase. Consider a stainless steel pizza oven, as they boast several benefits compared to a traditional brick oven.

1. Clean Burning Fuel

A brick pizza oven typically only gives you one choice of fuel: wood. This is why these ovens are also sometimes referred to as wood-fired pizza ovens. With wood comes everything it entails, such as splitting, feeding the fire, and forming a good bed of coals. A stainless steel oven is typically made to use natural gas or propane, sometimes from a permanent gas line that feeds right into your outdoor kitchen. This means you only need to push a button or turn a dial to prepare the oven for cooking.

2. Easier Maintenance

The ability to skip wood fuel will greatly lessen maintenance needs. There is no need to clean out ashes from the firebox, nor will you need to figure out a safe way to dispose of them. You can wipe a stainless steel pizza oven clean in just a few minutes, without any of the scrubbing needed to fully clean a porous brick oven.

3. Crisper Baking

Brick ovens usually feature a stone cooking surface, which provides relatively even heat but nowhere near as even nor as consistent as the metal cook surface in a stainless steel outdoor pizza oven. More even and consistent heat means you can make the thinnest and crispiest of pizza crusts without any worries of undercooked spots or burned edges.

4. Damage Resistance

An outdoor pizza oven is exposed to the elements -- rain, sun, and temperature fluctuations -- all day long. Environmental exposure can cause the mortar between bricks to crumble or crack, or even lead to a crack in a brick. Regular repairs are needed to keep a brick oven in like-new condition. Stainless steel can resist the damages caused by most environmental factors without any type of damage whatsoever.

5. Installation Versatility

A brick pizza oven is constructed in place, and once constructed it's more or less permanent unless you want to disassemble it brick by brick. Stainless steel units are self-contained and not constructed in place, but instead mounted in place. This means you can move the oven to a new area if you redesign your patio. You can even take a stainless steel pizza oven with you if you decide to move.
